Industrial videoscopes and borescopes have become indispensable tools for power generation operators, allowing engineers to inspect boiler tube bundles, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels without costly equipment teardown. Inside these systems, the optical head, illumination fibers, and control wiring of the videoscope are routed through internal bore diameters that are often narrow, corroded, and coated with scale or mineral deposits.
A specialist manufacturer of industrial inspection equipment approached Kaiflex after repeated field failures of the protective sheathing on its videoscope probes. During routine boiler and heat-exchanger inspections, the probe's outer protection layer was wearing through far faster than expected, exposing the delicate optical bundle underneath and forcing premature replacement of expensive inspection heads.
The Critical Engineering Challenges
Severe Abrasive Wear from Rough, Uneven Bore Surfaces. The interior walls of aging boiler tubes and heat exchangers are typically pitted, scaled, or lined with hardened deposits. As the probe was repeatedly inserted and withdrawn, this rough internal texture ground away at the protective braid, and standard stainless steel braiding wore through after only a limited number of inspection cycles.
High Temperature and Humidity Exposure. Inspections are frequently carried out shortly after equipment shutdown, when internal surfaces remain hot and residual steam keeps humidity levels high. This combination accelerated the degradation of conventional jacket materials and increased the risk of moisture ingress into the sensitive optical core.
Confined, Complex Routing in Small Spaces. Boiler tube bundles and heat exchanger passages are narrow and full of bends, requiring a protection layer flexible enough to navigate tight radii repeatedly without kinking, while still holding up mechanically under constant friction against the bore wall.

Tungsten Steel Braiding Layer for Superior Abrasion Resistance. The EC-UWB integrates a layer of tungsten steel braiding over the conduit core. Tungsten's exceptional hardness gives the conduit markedly higher resistance to continuous surface friction and abrasive scraping than standard stainless steel braid, directly addressing the wear pattern seen on the client's existing probes.
Stainless Steel Mono-Coil Core with Optional PU Jacket. Beneath the tungsten braid, a stainless steel mono-coil tube provides the structural backbone of the conduit, while an optional PU jacket layer between the coil and the braiding adds water and dust protection rated to IP66 — important for the humid, steam-laden conditions right after a shutdown.
Medium Flexibility (Rebound Type) for Tight-Radius Maneuvering. The conduit's medium, rebound-type flexibility lets the probe assembly follow the tight bends of tube bundles and heat exchanger passages while still returning to shape after repeated insertion and withdrawal, so inspection technicians can maneuver the probe naturally without added resistance.
Quantifiable Project Outcomes
Switching the probe's protective sheathing to the Kaiflex EC-UWB series delivered clear operational improvements for the client's inspection fleet:
Extended Probe Service Life. The tungsten-braided layer withstood many more insertion cycles against rough, scaled bore surfaces before showing signs of wear, meaningfully extending the usable life of each probe compared to the previous stainless-braided design.
Reduced Equipment Downtime and Replacement Costs. With fewer probes failing mid-inspection, the client reduced both unplanned equipment downtime and the frequency of costly probe head replacements.
